• Middle Level BPA State

    Davenport University

    Friday, February 23, 2018

It was another great year for the Davis Middle School Business Professionals of America Club at the Middle Level State Leadership Conference.  On Friday, February 23, twenty-two Hornets traveled with their advisors, Laura Wilson (DMS 7th Grade English) and Mindy Eggleston (HHS Business/Technology), parent chaperones, and two high school BPA mentors (Lauren Baker and Chloe Page) to Davenport University in Grand Rapids to compete for the state title.

Kenzie Randolph, BPA President, was a state champion in two events.  Kenzie won the Entrepreneurship Exploration event. Her task was to research an independently owned local company and a franchise company in the transportation industry. She interviewed and researched Transtewart Trucking and Logistics of Hillsdale and UPS.  Kenzie had to write a paper and submit it for technical scoring and then she had to present her findings to a panel of judges. Randolph and her teammates Olivia Gendron, Rylie Dietz, and MaryEllen Petersen were also state champions in the Introduction to Video Production Contest.  The girls created a video about Internet Safety.

Second place finishers included Addison Hoffman in Graphic Design, Jonathan Huber in Computer Literacy Concepts, and the Introduction to Video Production team of: Stephen Petersen, Leah Reiniche, and Julianna Throop.  The Video Production team of: Carson Cooley, Austin Hall, Jonathan Huber, and Stella McCourry placed third. It is interesting to note that Davis Middle School captured 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the video production contest.  The top two teams qualify for nationals.

Olivia Gendron also qualified for nationals with her third place finish in Graphic Design Promotion.  In fact, Davis Middle School entered ten students in the Graphic Design contest and they placed 2-11, beating out all but one school at the state conference (Leah Reiniche 4th, Carson Loader 5th, Brock Ladd 6th, Annemarie Moore 7th, Jonah Richards 8th, Sam Willes 9th, MaryEllen Petersen 10th, and Madelyn Fix 11th).

Seventh grader Jack Granata will also be heading the Dallas with his national qualifying place of 4th in spreadsheet applications (Excel). Jon Huber placed fifth in Extemporaneous Speech.

In order to qualify for nationals, a student must place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a judged event, 1st through 5th in a test, and then the top two teams qualify.  The BPA National Leadership Conference will be held in Dallas, Texas, May 9-13. It is an amazing trip. If anyone wishes to contribute to getting the students to nationals, please contact Mindy Eggleston or Laura Wilson.
